Lombard street bagehot6/27/2023 Bagehot would warn us of plenty of consequences, all unpleasant the trigger will revolve around the word ‘confidence.’ I think it fair to say the word ‘prudent’ can no longer be combined with the words ‘central bank,’ at least with respect to the largest economies. It’s an ugly picture for sure with the masters of the Dollar, Yen, Euro and lesser currencies conspiring to lower interest rates and create financing schemes, without destroying confidence in their fiat money, all with the objective of maximizing employment and economic vibrancy. Bagehot’s cautions merit repetition, times have changed the world moved away from the gold standard to paper currencies that now function in constant competition. This work can be summarized with three concepts: (1) banks should always carry sufficient reserves, (2) the central bank – in this case the Bank of England – should loan against “all good banking securities, and as largely as the public ask for them,” and (3) a sufficiently high rate of interest should be charged against loans to “operate as a heavy fine on unreasonable timidity, and will prevent the greatest number of applications by persons who do not require it.” Lombard Street is an early call for prudent national banking policies, especially regarding the provision of liquidity during a financial panic.

It's complicated, but the main point to bear in mind is that the president is elected indirectly. Ask a man or woman in the street why this system of electing a president was adopted and how it works and you will almost certainly draw a blank. Then in 2016 Hillary Clinton received nearly three million more votes than Donald Trump but still lost by a substantial margin – 304 to 227 – among the electors. Bush squeaked into office with a five vote majority in the electoral college even though Al Gore outpolled him by half a million votes. Until 2000 the electorate couldn't be blamed for being unaware of this possibility, because it hadn't happened since 1888. Let the People Pick the President: The Case for Abolishing the Electoral CollegeĮvery four years Americans wake up to the fact that a president can be elected despite receiving fewer votes than another candidate. Why Do We Still Have the Electoral College?

Eternal Warrior, Volume 1 by Greg Pak6/26/2023 His hyper detailed artwork has maximum impact in this issue, as Hairsine is hacking-and-slashing through violent action scenes. Pak also lays the groundwork for future issues here right out of the gate by setting the stage for the conflict between Eternal Warrior and his daughter.Īrtist Trevor Hairsine is perfectly suited to draw a book like “Eternal Warrior”. Here we get to see Gilad rise up into the role of a true leader as he leads his team of warriors into battle against the Lord of Darkness, Negral. Pak does a great job of incorporating all the mythology Gilad Anni-Padda’s immortality in with all big sweeping action sequences. Here he takes the violent swordplay of “300” and fused it with the stunning complexity of Game of Thrones. Writer Greg Pak truly elevates the “Eternal Warrior” to new heights and makes the title more than just another warrior’s tale. That is all about to change with “Eternal Warrior” #1, as Greg Pak and Trevor Hairsine deliver a powerful debut issue for the re-launch of this character. While “Eternal Warrior” did have a 50-issue run under the old Valiant banner, the book failed to generate the excitement that the character truly deserved. One of the best things about the re-launch of the Valiant universe is that readers have become passionate about characters that they might not have previously had an affinity for.

Book in the woods by tana french6/26/2023 Faithful Place and The Secret Place both have slower pacing because of several flashbacks, but Broken Harbor keeps the sad old stories to a minimum. And there’s still a satisfying character-driven subplot with Scorcher’s sister that also has a real impact on the case (as they often do). The victimized family that might have been stalked feels like something you could see in a movie or an episode of Law & Order. Mick “Scorcher” Kennedy is a solid narrator and one of the most experienced detectives of all the novels. Second, Broken Harbor is the most classic thriller of the bunch and a great way to start the series with a bang. If you enjoy them they make a nice cap to the series as the most atmospheric and lyrical. Or you can quit feeling good about the ones you read already. The Likeness is the most similar in tone and has Cassie, the secondary character of ITW, as its main character, so the two work best together. I have recommended it many times only to have people bail out and never return. Either they really don’t like Rob (with good reason) or they hate the ending, which is not traditionally satisfying and leaves several questions unanswered. First, many people find In the Woods off-putting. This order is built to address a few concerns.
